Dr. Turner was a great listener and helped me realize how to think about problems in a better way. I'm glad I've learned how to deal with my emotions on my own, and I hope I can keep going strong.

Rating: ★★★★★★★★★★ (10/10) Review: This is a long review, but well worth your read. If I could give Blake a review of 10 stars, I would without hesitation. Growing up, I had many challenges in my life, and therapy was something I despised. I held a belief that therapists were merely going through the motions, caring only about their paycheck. The thought of seeking therapy again was daunting, but as I've grown older, I realized it was necessary. Blake, however, shattered my preconceived notions and made me feel valued and significant. I cannot emphasize enough how genuinely empowering my experience with him has been. Blake's unwavering support and dedication have allowed me to regain control over my life. We have been working together for approximately a year, and I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to give him a chance. Our sessions always seem to end too quickly, as time flies by unnoticed. One of the things I appreciate most about Blake is that I never feel judged in his presence. This safe space has given me the confidence to express myself fully and honestly. As a Latina, feeling heard within my own family has been a rarity. However, through therapy with Blake, I have come to understand that my feelings are valid and worthy of acknowledgment. He has encouraged me to explore different perspectives and challenged me to broaden my worldview. This newfound awareness has been invaluable, and I am eternally grateful for Blake's guidance and support. In conclusion, Blake is an exceptional therapist who has had a profound impact on my life. His ability to make me feel important and heard is unparalleled. If you're hesitant about therapy like I once was, I implore you to give Blake a chance. He has not only empowered me to stand my ground but has also helped me reclaim control over my life. Thank you, Blake, for your remarkable presence and the positive change you have brought into my life

I can’t adequately explain how grateful I am for Olympus Counseling Services. Blake has been such a joy to work with, from working hard to make sure we have a time that works for our family, to making it his mission to connect with my son, so he can offer him the best counseling services. My son has said more than once that even when he feels like he no longer needs Blake for counseling, he wants to keep seeing him as more of a life coach. I am one grateful momma! Thank you, Blake!!

How Gottman Method Couples Therapy Helps

How Gottman Method Couples Therapy Helps

When the same argument keeps returning, it can start to feel as though the relationship itself is the problem. Often, the deeper issue is not that two people care too little. It is that stress, hurt, missed bids for connection, and unhelpful conflict patterns have taken over. Gottman Method couples therapy gives partners a structured, compassionate way to understand those patterns and practice a different response.

This approach is useful for couples who feel distant, stuck in frequent conflict, recovering from broken trust, or simply wanting to strengthen a relationship that matters to them. It does not ask either partner to be perfect. Instead, it helps both people better understand what happens between them and build skills that support respect, friendship, emotional safety, and teamwork.

What Is Gottman Method Couples Therapy?

The Gottman Method is an evidence-based approach to relationship counseling developed from decades of research on couples. It focuses on observable relationship behaviors, communication patterns, emotional connection, and the everyday habits that help relationships remain steady through stress.

In therapy, the goal is not to decide who is right or persuade one partner to accept the other partner’s view. A therapist helps each person slow down enough to see the cycle they are caught in. For example, one person may criticize because they feel ignored, while the other withdraws because they feel overwhelmed or attacked. Both partners may leave the conversation feeling alone, even though both want to feel closer.

Gottman Method therapy addresses the cycle rather than labeling either person as the problem. Couples learn how to express needs more clearly, listen without immediately defending themselves, repair difficult moments, and create more positive connection in daily life.

Why Conflict Can Feel So Personal

Arguments about money, parenting, intimacy, housework, in-laws, or screen time are rarely only about the topic on the surface. A disagreement about spending may also carry fears about security. A conflict about chores may reflect feeling unseen or unsupported. A tense discussion about intimacy can bring up rejection, shame, grief, health concerns, or past trauma.

When these deeper emotions are not named, couples can become increasingly reactive. One partner may raise their voice, make broad accusations, or bring up old hurts. The other may shut down, become sarcastic, or leave the room. Over time, even small issues can feel loaded because the relationship has become associated with tension rather than comfort.

Gottman-informed counseling makes room for the practical issue and the emotional meaning underneath it. That distinction matters. A couple may not agree on every decision, but they can learn to approach disagreement without damaging the sense that they are on the same team.

The Skills Couples Practice in Therapy

Recognizing harmful conflict patterns

A central part of this work is learning to recognize patterns that predict relational distress. These can include criticism of a partner’s character, defensiveness, contempt, and shutting down. Contempt is especially damaging because it communicates disgust, superiority, ridicule, or disrespect.

Recognizing these behaviors is not meant to shame anyone. Under pressure, many people fall into habits they learned in their families, previous relationships, or periods of chronic stress. Therapy creates a place to understand the habit, take responsibility for its impact, and develop a more constructive alternative.

A complaint, for instance, can be specific: “I felt overwhelmed when I handled bedtime alone again.” Criticism turns global: “You never help, and you do not care about this family.” The first statement gives a partner something to respond to. The second usually invites defense.

Starting hard conversations more gently

The first few minutes of a conversation often shape what follows. When a discussion begins with blame, interruption, or a harsh tone, both nervous systems can quickly move into protection mode. Couples practice softer ways to begin difficult conversations by describing the situation, sharing a feeling, and making a clear request.

This does not mean speaking in a scripted or overly careful way all the time. It means giving the conversation a better chance. A direct request such as, “Could we set aside 20 minutes tonight to talk about next month’s budget?” is more workable than bringing up a financial fear during a rushed morning or in the middle of another argument.

Repairing after a difficult moment

Even healthy couples miscommunicate. The difference is often whether they know how to repair. A repair attempt might be an apology, a request for a pause, a moment of humor that does not dismiss the issue, or a simple statement such as, “I am getting defensive. I want to understand you.”

Repair is not a shortcut around accountability. If one partner has said something hurtful, repairing includes acknowledging the impact and making a different choice next time. But couples do not need flawless communication to heal. They need enough safety to return to the conversation and enough follow-through to make repair believable.

Building friendship and everyday connection

Many relationships become strained not only because of conflict, but because positive connection slowly fades. Work demands, parenting, caregiving, anxiety, depression, grief, and exhaustion can leave little energy for curiosity or affection. Partners may coordinate a household effectively while no longer feeling known by one another.

Gottman Method couples therapy helps partners rebuild the friendship that supports resilience. This can include learning more about each other’s current pressures, hopes, values, and inner experiences. It may involve creating small rituals of connection, such as checking in after work, showing appreciation, or protecting time to talk without solving a problem.

These moments can sound simple, but they are not insignificant. A relationship is shaped by repeated interactions. Feeling noticed and respected in ordinary moments can make hard conversations less threatening.

Not Every Problem Has One Solution

Some relationship conflicts are solvable through a practical agreement. Couples may decide how to divide responsibilities, set a budget, manage schedules, or establish boundaries with extended family. Other conflicts are more enduring because they involve differences in personality, family culture, faith, priorities, or desired levels of closeness and independence.

Therapy can help couples tell the difference. The aim with ongoing differences is not forced agreement. It is learning to discuss the issue with greater empathy, flexibility, and respect. Partners can explore what the issue represents for each person and find compromises that do not require either person to abandon what matters most to them.

This is also where the approach becomes more nuanced than communication tips alone. A couple may need communication skills, but they may also need space to grieve a life transition, address trauma responses, discuss a faith crisis, or understand how anxiety, depression, addiction, or chronic stress is affecting the relationship.

What to Expect in Couples Counseling

Early sessions generally focus on understanding the relationship’s story, current concerns, strengths, stressors, and goals. A therapist may meet with each partner together and, in some cases, individually as part of the assessment process. This helps create a clearer picture of the patterns affecting the relationship.

From there, counseling becomes practical and collaborative. Couples may practice a new conversation in session, identify triggers that lead to escalation, and work on specific skills between appointments. Progress is not always linear. A long-standing pattern can reappear during a stressful week, especially when parenting demands, work pressure, health concerns, or family conflict are high.

What matters is that partners become more able to notice the pattern sooner and respond differently. Over time, many couples experience less escalation, more emotional openness, and a stronger sense that they can handle challenges together.

When Couples Therapy May Need Additional Support

Couples counseling is not a substitute for safety planning or specialized treatment when there is ongoing abuse, coercive control, intimidation, or fear. In those situations, individual support and safety-focused resources may be more appropriate than joint sessions.

Additional individual care can also be helpful when trauma, substance use, obsessive-compulsive disorder, severe depression, intense anxiety, or unresolved grief is significantly affecting the relationship. Relationship therapy can be part of the healing process, but each concern deserves appropriate attention. A thoughtful therapist can help determine whether couples work, individual therapy, or a combination offers the safest and most useful path.

At Olympus Counseling Services, couples in Layton can receive in-person support, while telehealth appointments can make counseling more accessible for clients throughout Utah. Beginning with a consultation or discovery visit can offer a low-pressure way to ask questions and consider whether this approach fits your relationship.

A relationship does not have to reach a breaking point before it deserves care. If conversations have become painful, distant, or repetitive, seeking support can be a meaningful way to make space for honesty, accountability, and a renewed sense of partnership.
